PRECISION VITICULTURE
With the emphasis on the future of the industry being quality, the results from the 2006 spectral survey are showing a great start.
The improvement in SD (Standard Deviation) is twofold; part of the result is caused by the season, the key factor being the less you need to water (irrigate) the less variation you get in the crop. In addition we started with a very full profile at flowering followed by a cool start to the growing season.
The second factor is reliant on management. A notable drop in irrigation-related veritably was noticed, however more work on this will only improve (lower) the SD further.
Winemakers should have some excellent consistent fruit to work with this season.

THE PREMIUM BLOCK for 2006
Goes to ???? - Not that easy, we have to wait until the grapes become wine, however we will try and give you some feedback during the year if possible.
We have seen 3 blocks stand out as showing excellent consistency and initial reports suggest the quality is there as well.
For the grower / vineyard to get the EM Survey of their block they will need to discover the block for themselves, criteria is as follows.
- A Standard Deviation less than 20 for 90% of the block
- The vineyard must be more than 4 years old
- To keep in with what we do best it needs to be Shiraz
- The vineyard needs to be nominated prior to 01/07/06
- The vineyard needs a Mean value between 100 and 140
- The vineyard is between 2 and 10 ha
The Reward for the Top Gun
We like to know what makes great vineyards tick - so committed are we to the future of the industry that we will carry out a free EM survey to the winning vineyard.
After the survey we will provide the grower/ vineyard with layers inc:
- EM data - (showing soil boundaries)
- Slope
- Elevation
- Aspect
Conditions:
- Open to G D Rural customers only
- EM survey will be carried out before flowering 2006
- Vineyards with steel trellis posts cannot enter - due to effects steel posts have on EM38 survey equipment

Overview
IPV (Integrated Precision Viticulture) is a key element in the future of viticulture.
IPV = the collective working of existing and new technologies with the aid of existing knowledge and skill base.
For IPV to work the key element is the day-to-day - hour-to-hour collection, analysing and execution of the information. Many growers can get so much more out of their existing information if combined with new data and technologies.

|
Who can help
Through training, awareness and information development GD Rural has found a group of Viticulturist and Vineyard management groups are starting to develop strategies and applications for both the DMSI (Spectral Imaging) and the EM38 SEA (EM soil surveys and Slope, Aspect and Elevation)
To help you make the best use of this data we recommend you to contact these people, you will notice in the (left) side menu under IPV a list of qualified companies that can help.
We will add companies as they show abilities or expertise in the application of the GIS/GPS data.

Integrating IPV
Its 6 Years down the track - Spectral Imaging is becoming part of vineyard management.
Zonal management is key outcome of spectral imaging - it allows growers & viticulturist to minimize inputs and reduce variability throughout the vineyard.
From above ground to underground IPV has the tools to cover the fall spectrum.
With the integration of the Sentek Enviroscan to track and measure moisture and the Solusampler to analyse exactly what is available to the plant.
Gone are the days where you put a seeders on a tractor and just drove, with the aid of GIS software and GPS guidance you can now apply your cover crop to increase or decrease vigour in the vineyard. The same applies for mulching, pruning and fertilising.

Where Spectral and EM surveys have helped
EM Surveys are helping define problems in vineyards associated with soil types, enabling the grower to accurately apply targeted management strategies to improve consistency.
The surveys can also show what impact slope, aspect, and to a degree elevation has on the growth of the vineyard.
The spectral survey when used in conjunction with a flowering survey helps to highlight and define where the current season is taking your vineyard.
